M A Smith Chartered Accountants was started by its Director, Mark Smith who has over 20 years experience of working with owner managed businesses, charities and mutual societies.

VAT Returns
If the vatable income of your business exceeds the registration limit (£81,000 from 1st April 2014) or if you decide to voluntarily register for VAT, then you will need to register with HM Revenue & Customs and submit periodic (quarterly or annual) returns. In addition from 1st April 2012 virtually all businesses, with very few exceptions, will need to perform both of these tasks online.
There are various VAT schemes available and we would look at them all to determine which would suit your business the best. In some cases it may even be more beneficial to register for VAT on a purely cashflow basis even if you don’t exceed the current threshold.
ACCOUNTS Preparation
Whatever your business type we can assist you with the preparation of your annual accounts.
If you are a sole trader or partnership we can also assist with the preparation and filing of your Self Assessment Tax Returns (see Self Assessment section).
If you run a limited company then the abbreviated accounts, showing restricted financial information which is available on public record, will need to be filed within nine months of the period/year end (please be aware that different rules apply in the initial trading period following incorporation). In addition full financial statements will need to be prepared for submission to HM Revenue & Customs along with your Corporation Tax Return (see Corporation Tax section). The full financial statements may be required by your bank if you currently have an overdraft, loan or are in the process of arranging either of these.
Whatever the purpose of your accounts we will ensure that they are carefully explained to you. We pride ourselves on giving you the information and support you need to evaluate your business and to plan for the future.
SELF ASSESSMENT
You may be required to complete a Self Assessment Tax Return for a number of reasons. These may be that you are a sole trader, a member of a partnership, a higher rate tax payer, own rental property, a company director or have received a request to complete a Return by HM Revenue & Customs.
If any of these situations applies to you then we would be happy to prepare and submit your Tax Return(s).
Many of our clients already have busy lives and so are delighted to let us take this burden from them. In addition because of our experience we can help to ensure that you make the maximum usage of all of your allowable reliefs whilst keeping your tax bill as low as possible.
CORPORATION TAX
As well as assisting with your Accounts Preparation we can also help in the calculation of your corporation tax liability (due nine months and a day after your year end).
In addition we can also ensure that your Corporation Tax Return is submitted on line within the necessary deadlines (one year from the accounting period end – although multiple returns will be needed for accounting periods of more than one year).
PAYROLL SERVICES
We would be delighted to organise the running of your payroll system ensuring that your staff are both paid correctly and on a timely basis.
In addition we will ensure that you are also informed of your monthly and annual obligations with regard to the HM Revenue & Customs in respect of both payments and forms due. We will ensure that the recent Real Time Information (RTI) changes are also dealt with on a monthly and ongoing basis.
We will also inform you whether or not there are any obligations due in respect of Benefits in Kind, as additional forms and potentially a payment may be required.
book-keeping
Maintaining your books and records is sometimes the last thing you will want to do when you come home from a hard day’s work. If this is something that simply doesn’t interest you or that you really do not have the time to do, we would be delighted to take this task off your hands.
We will provide you with a list of the documents that we need and then arrange to collect them on an agreed periodic basis.
We will then ensure that you records are maintained on a regular basis and that this work can be used to help reduce your year-end accountancy fee.
Company Secretarial
We can look after your Company Secretarial obligations whether you want us to set up a new limited company, maintain your statutory books or simply ensure that all of the necessary forms are filed at Companies House.
We are able to set up a limited company on the same day and ensure that all of the necessary documents (Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum and Articles of Association) are posted to you in less than a week.
